Charge Point Operators and QR code security

15 November 2024

The AFIR regulation mandates that CPOs (Charging Point Operators) managing public charging stations must offer anonymous payment options, either through payment terminals or QR codes. Both static (via sticker) and dynamic QR codes can facilitate direct payment.

However, it’s important to be aware of potential scams involving QR codes. Scammers have been known to place fake QR codes on charging stations, redirecting EV drivers to phishing websites.

Make use of Dynamic QR Codes

Charge Point Operators can improve security by using dynamic QR codes, the charging station does need to have a screen. Road’s software supports Dynamic QR codes.

Promote the use of charge cards or Mobile apps

Most EV drivers use a charge card (RFID). This is a safe way of charging. An alternative is to let EV drivers charge through a mobile app. The E-Flux by Road mobile app will allow in-app charge sessions and payments from January 2025.

The app and dashboard are available via our E-Flux platform which lets you easily add and manage charge points in a single dashboard, to reduce admin, maximise your revenue. You can find out more here and offer an effortless charging experience for your drivers.

As an EV driver, you should pay attention to these points to ensure you can always charge safely using QR codes.
