At a glance

This guide covers everything you need to know about EV charge cards, from how they work to the benefits they offer, including convenience, cost savings, security and seamless access to charging networks across Europe.

How do charge cards work?

EV charge cards are designed specifically for EV charging, and work similarly to credit and debit cards. These cards are provided by mobility service providers (MSPs) such as E-Flux, and allow EV drivers to charge at public charging stations.

To start a charging session, drivers can simply tap or scan their charge card. Once the card’s information is verified, the charging can begin.

The technology behind the functionality of EV charge cards is called the Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI), an open communication protocol. OCPI allows seamless roaming between different EV networks, so that drivers can use their charge cards on various networks and at stations.

EV charge cards often come with different subscription models that cater to various user needs. For instance, frequent EV drivers might opt for a subscription plan with a monthly fee that has benefits such as lower charging rates or no roaming fees. Occasional drivers might prefer a pay-as-you-go plan with no monthly fee.

Benefits of a charging station card

There are numerous benefits of a charging station card like the ones from E-Flux. These include:

Convenience and network access

An EV charge card gives you access to multiple charging networks across Europe, so you don’t need to have other cards or services.

Cost savings

You can choose cards and plans that best suit you financially. Some cards also eliminate roaming fees, making charging more affordable.

App

The E-Flux app provides real-time information about charging station availability, types of connectors, charging speeds, and pricing. This helps you make informed decisions and reduces waiting times. You can also keep track of all your charge history.

Simplified billing

With a charge card, all your charging sessions are consolidated and generally you’ll get a single monthly invoice. This simplifies expense tracking and reimbursement, especially if you’re travelling for business.

Security

EV charge cards offer security features such as card blocking and secure payments.

Can I charge without an EV charge card?

You can charge without an EV charge card, using a debit or credit card. However, you won’t be able to enjoy the benefits of an EV charge card, such as insights into available charge points, and charge session management.

Can I have a charging card without a subscription?

Yes, you can have a charging card without a subscription. Providers like E-Flux offer a “pay as you charge” model, whereby you’re not locked into any contracts, nor do you have to pay monthly subscription costs. This is usually the preferred model for drivers who don’t need to charge frequently at public stations, or newer drivers who are still getting familiar with charging and payments.

Where can I use my EV charge card?

You can generally use your EV charge card at all public charging stations, like those at retail and hospitality sites.. However, the type of card you have will determine what you can access. For example, with an E-Flux charge card, there are 530k + charge points connected to their roaming platform, which means you have broad access. Other charge cards might not offer such wide access based on their roaming agreements.
