Why hotels need to offer EV charging - and how to get started
Hotels are increasingly offering EV charging infrastructure to attract guests, as EV adoption rises. It's a key factor when travellers are looking for accommodation, and it helps boost revenue and guest satisfaction, and meet future sustainability goals.
At a glance
Hotels are increasingly offering EV charging to attract eco-conscious travellers, boost revenue and comply with stricter regulations. With rising EV adoption, charging availability is now a key factor when booking hotels.
Research shows that EV charging availability is increasingly becoming a key factor for travellers when choosing hotels, particularly as the adoption of electric vehicles grows. Around 55% of European travellers are more conscious of sustainability than before the pandemic, and many are adjusting their travel habits to be more eco-friendly, including selecting accommodation that offers EV charging.
EV charging has become a priority for many guests. Data from Hilton Hotels reveals that searches for EV charging stations at their locations have surged, making it one of the most important factors influencing bookings.
By 2030, Europe is projected to have 40 to 50 million electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads, aligning with the push to reduce carbon emissions and transition to sustainable transportation under the European Green Deal.
This surge in EV adoption is fuelled by stricter emissions regulations, government incentives, improvements in battery technology, and the expansion of public charging networks. To support this growth, the European Union will need around 3.4 million public charging points by 2030, according to McKinsey.
When hotels provide EV charging infrastructure, they are not only meeting the growing demand for electric mobility across Europe, but also attracting more guests, improving guest satisfaction and boosting revenue.
We explore why hotels are increasingly integrating EV charge points into their infrastructure, and why it’s such a critical move.
Why install charge stations
Increase dwell time
EV charging can take a few hours, encouraging guests to spend more time at your hotelt. This can lead to an increase in spending, for example at your spa or restaurants, and therefore more revenue.
Improve customer experience
Offering EV charging makes it convenient for guests who drive EVs to visit your establishment. Ignoring this segment of drivers might mean they will frequent other places where they can charge.
Attract a new customer base and build customer loyalty
EV drivers plan their trips around charging availability, and they’re more likely to visit locations that cater to their needs.
Attract environmentally conscious guests
Eco-conscious drivers are attracted to establishments that support their own commitment to sustainability. Additionally, establishments with charging infrastructure enhance their own brand image by supporting EVs.
Incorporate EV charging into your sustainability efforts
The adoption of EVs is highly dependent on the availability of charging infrastructure. By offering charging facilities, you support this movement.
Adhere to regulations and future-proof your business
Governments are moving toward stricter emissions regulations, and the eventual phasing out of internal combustion engine vehicles. Part of their plans includes increasing the number of charging points to support this. Starting in 2025, the Mobility Orientation Law (LOM) will require non-residential parking lots, such as those in hotels, to have at least one EV charging point for every 20 spaces. This regulation is part of France's broader efforts to support the transition to electric mobility and expand public access to EV charging infrastructure.
By installing EV chargers now, businesses in the retail and hospitality sectors can future-proof themselves now instead of scrambling in future to comply with regulatory requirements.
Encourage sustainable tourism
As eco-friendly travel becomes more popular, travellers are looking for hotels and resorts that support sustainability. By providing EV charging, you can encourage this segment to your business.
Benefit from incentives
Many governments offer incentives to businesses that install EV charge stations to accelerate the growth of EV charging infrastructure. These incentives could include tax credits, grants or rebates.
